Bhubaneswar: A depression over northeast Madhya Pradesh and adjoining north Chhattisgarh continued to move north-northwestwards on Saturday, while several parts of Odisha recorded heavy to very heavy rainfall in the past 24 hours.
Depression Update
The depression moved north-northwestwards at a speed of 13 kmph during the past six hours and lay centred at 8:30 am IST on September 26 over northeast Madhya Pradesh and adjoining areas, near latitude 23.8°N and longitude 81.6°E.
The system was located around 70 km south-southwest of Sidhi, 90 km south-southeast of Rewa and 120 km southeast of Satna in Madhya Pradesh. It was also about 180 km south of Prayagraj and 250 km south-southeast of Fatehpur in Uttar Pradesh.
The depression is likely to move north-northwestwards towards southeast Uttar Pradesh across northeast Madhya Pradesh and remain a depression until the evening of September 26. It is then expected to gradually weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area during the subsequent 12 hours. The system is being continuously monitored by Doppler Weather Radars at Raipur and Lucknow.
Odisha recorded intense rainfall at 19 locations across nine districts during the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on September 26. Nawana in Mayurbhanj recorded the highest rainfall at 126 mm, classified as very heavy rainfall. It was followed by Raighar in Nabarangpur (107 mm) and Khaira in Baleshwar (101 mm).
The weather department has issued a thunderstorm warning valid until 8:30 am on September 27, forecasting short-duration intense thunderstorm activity in several districts.
The warning covers Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Sundargarh, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Khordha, Cuttack, Puri, Nayagarh, Angul, Dhenkanal and Deogarh districts.
Residents in the warned areas have been advised to remain alert during thunderstorm activity and follow the latest weather advisories.
