Bhubaneswar: The Union Government has designated Paradip Port in Odisha as a ‘Mega Port’ under the Indian Ports Act, 2025.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways issued a notification in this regard on Friday. Paradip Port, located in Jagatsinghpur district, is the only port on India’s eastern coast to be designated as a ‘Mega Port’.
As per reports, Paradip Port got the ‘Mega Port’ status after it met the structural and operational criteria prescribed under Section 73 of the Indian Ports Act, 2025.
Apart from Paradip Port, three other ports—Deendayal Port (Kandla) in Gujarat, Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Nhava Sheva) in Mumbai and Mundra Port in Gujarat—have been designated as ‘Mega Ports’.
It is worth mentioning here that Paradip Port serves as a critical logistics hub for eastern and central India as it handles large volumes of coal, iron ore, fertilizers and crude oil.
The designation is said to be an important milestone in the growth of Paradip Port as a key maritime gateway of India’s eastern coast. The recognition is expected to further strengthen port infrastructure, operational capabilities and maritime connectivity.
