OHRC seeks detailed report on death of devotees at Puri Rath Yatra

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has taken serious note of the casualties reported during July 16 Rath Yatra in Puri and has sought a detailed explanation from the State government officials.

The Commission has issued a show-cause notice to the Principal Secretary of the Home Department and the Puri Collector, directing them to submit a report regarding the incidents that led to the deaths. Furthermore, the OHRC has instructed the Health Department to ensure proper and timely medical treatment for all those injured during the mega festival.

In anticipation of the upcoming Bahuda Yatra (the return car festival), the Commission has strictly directed the Home Department, the Puri Collector, and the SP to take all necessary measures to ensure a safe and secure environment for the devotees.

The OHRC passed these directives after hearing a petition filed by advocate Nishikant Mishra. Notably, two devotees lost their lives during this year’s Rath Yatra — one due to suffocation in the massive crowd and another following a cardiac arrest.
