Former Lanjigarh MLA Sibaji Majhi passes away

Bhubaneswar: Former Lanjigarh MLA Sibaji Majhi died at his native village Danarguda in the Bijepur area late Tuesday night. He was undergoing treatment for chest pain.

Majhi was initially admitted to a hospital in Bhawanipatna after complaining of chest pain and was later shifted to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar. After receiving treatment, he was discharged and returned to his village, where he breathed his last.

Majhi entered politics and became the first MLA of the newly formed Lanjigarh Assembly constituency. He represented the constituency from 2009 to 2014.

During his tenure as MLA, Majhi worked for the development of the tribal-dominated and remote areas of Lanjigarh and Thuamul Rampur. After the formation of the Special Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Council in Kalahandi district, he became its first chairman. He took several initiatives for the development of tribal and Dalit areas of the district during his tenure.

His death has cast a pall of gloom across Kalahandi. Leaders from various political parties and social workers have expressed grief over his demise.
