Bhubaneswar: The toll in ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing and export facility in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district climbed to 11 on Thursday, following the death of another woman from Odisha.
The official bulletin from the Tamil Nadu Health Department identified the deceased as Rita Juang from Kendujhar, who succumbed at 7 this morning. Others from Odisha, who lost their lives, are Subasi Juang, Gumani Juang (15), Phulomani Juang, Shibani Juang, Geeta Juang, Champabati Juang, Purnima Juang, and Parbati Juang. The other two victims are from Assam.
The mortal remains of seven deceased were airlifted to Odisha on June 23 and 24. The remains of the remaining four will be transported after the completion of necessary legal formalities, the bulletin added.
A total of 32 migrant workers from Odisha were admitted to hospitals following the incident on June 21 at a private facility near Periyapalayam, affecting around 80 workers who were resting in nearby hostel rooms.
The tragedy predominantly affected migrant women workers from Odisha and Assam, many of whom were employed at the facility, which also provided on-site accommodation. The leak, believed to have originated from a pipeline or valve failure during routine operations, quickly spread across the premises, exposing dozens of workers to the toxic gas. The workers suffered severe respiratory distress and other symptoms.
