Scared of death penalty, undertrial prisoner dies of heart attack
Keonjhar: In a bizarre incident, an undertrial prisoner in Keonjhar Jail Turi Munda died of a heart attack on Friday, a day after Keonjhar ADJ Court awarded death penalty to a rape convict.
A special court here on Thursday awarded death sentence to Sunil Nayak for raping and murdering a three-year-old girl of Sasanga village under Champua police limits in 2017.
Turi was lodged at the jail on the charges of raping a minor girl.
Scared of the dire consequences and a fate similar to that of Sunil Nayak, Turi was under stress and suffered a heart attack.
Finding Turi unconscious, staffers at the prison took him to Keonjhar District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) where doctors declared him “brought dead”.
Turi, who hails from Mishramal village under Pandapara police limits, was booked under sections 354(A), 354(B) of IPC and section 8 of Protection of Children for Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Keonjhar Jail Superintendent, Gariba Sahoo, said, “He (Turi) was accused in a case under POCSO Act. He seemed fine and healthy and did his chores like he used to do regularly. Yesterday, another inmate of the jail accused in a POCSO Act case was awarded death punishment. This could be the reason of his stress. After investigation, the exact reason behind his death will be known.”
