Pre-paid smart meter proposed by Energy Minister
Bhubaneswar: In an attempt to check power pilferage and transmission loss of electricity in the State, a proposal has been made by the Energy Department to introduce ‘Tamper-Proof Pre-Paid Smart Meter’ and ‘Tamper-Proof Smart Meter’.
This was stated by Energy Minister Dibya Shankar Mishra on the sidelines of a House Committee meeting on Monday. Mishra said, “The main objective of Smart Meter is to make it tamper-free. No one can resort to tampering. The magnet wheel can’t be slowed down. Even the connection from behind can’t be delinked as used to be the illegal practice.”
“Another proposal is Pre-Paid Smart Meter. It will be having an intel card by means of which one can have the pre-paid facility. The power supply will be provided as per the amount paid and one can recharge it after the amount of consumption is exhausted,” he added.
“We have proposed to first instal pre-paid smart meter in Sambalpur. In Rourkela, we have proposed to instal smart meter as pilot project, which will be tamper-proof. If anyone tries to tamper with it, the detection facility can trace it. If a consumer fails to deposit his due, power supply can be disconnected by using remote facility,” the Energy Minister said.
“This will help in system improvement and revenue collection. We are making the arrangement for pre-paid recharge system. The nitty-gritty is under discussion,” Mishra added.
