Odia filmmaker Manmohan Mahapatra passes away
Bhubaneswar: Eminent Odia producer and director Manmohan Mahapatra passed away at a private hospital here on Monday. He was 69.
Manmohan won eight consecutive national film awards. Some of his critically acclaimed films are ‘Nishita Swapna,’ ‘Majhi Pahacha,’ ‘Tired Afternoon,’ ‘Neeraba Jhada,’ ‘Seeta Raati’ and ‘Bhinna Samaya.’
He made a couple of short films and then directed Neeraba Jhada that won him another National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Odia.
His first film ‘Seeta Raati’ made in 1976 was the first Odia film to be screened at International Film Festival in 1982.
Recently his Odia movie, ‘Bhija Matira Swarga’ had won six awards in different categories in the 30th State Film Awards. Manmohan also won the Best Director award for the film.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed grief over Manmohan’s demise and said his contribution to Odia film industry is immense.
Recalling her association with Manmohan, veteran actress Maheswata Ray said, “It is shocking news for me. Apart from being a family friend, Manmohan was humble and down to earth. His style of filmmaking was quite unique.”
Actor Bijay Mohanty said, “He (Manmohan) had started a new era and put Odia film industry on the national stage. He treated everybody equally and made films for the common man.”
