New agri laws will benefit farmers: Pradhan
Dhenkanal: The new farm laws were formulated keeping the interest of the farmers in view and for their benefit but some people are opposing it and misleading them, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan said here on Saturday.
Addressing a farmers’ rally, Pradhan said farmers all over the country, including Odisha, will be benefited by the new farm laws. He said the Union Government has initiated several measures to commercialise agriculture to help farmers get more benefit but some Opposition parties are misleading them. They are creating a fear psychosis in the minds of the farmers that the minimum support price (MSP) will be abolished and the farmers will lose their ownership of land if the new farm laws are implemented.
Pradhan said as per the provision of the new farm laws, farmers can sell their products anywhere in the country in addition to the APMC Mandi. Provision has been made for one nation and one market to help farmers get a better price for their produce. The Minister said the MSP of paddy was hiked from Rs 1,310 per quintal in 2013-14 to Rs 1,815 in 2019-20 and Rs 1,867 in the current year.
Criticising the Odisha Government, Pradhan said though the Central Government was providing a huge amount of money to farmers, it was not reaching them. He alleged that token for procurement of paddy was being distributed on a partisan basis.
Pradhan said during the last six years, the Central Government has provided Rs 60,000 crore to the farmers of Odisha under different schemes but the farmers are being deprived of the Central assistance.
