Kendrapara boat tragedy: Death toll rises to 10
With the recovery of a six-year-old girl’s body, the death toll in the boat capsize incident in Mahanadi river near Nipania in the district has now touched ten.
A team of ODRAF recovered the dead body of the minor girl, who was missing after the boat mishap.
Earlier, the death toll in the boat capsize incident reached nine after eight other bodies of the victims were fished out from the river late on Wednesday night. All the victims were residents of Hasina village in Jagatsinghpur district.
Meanwhile, Minister Prafulla Samal, MP Kulamani Samal and MLA Debasish Samantaray had a harrowing time today while visiting the village of the victims.
According to sources, the delegation had to face public wrath who demanded that the compensation amount should be made Rs lakh per each family of the deceased. However, since the delegation had visited the village taking just Rs ex-gratia 10,000 assistance from the Red Cross Fund.
It may to be noted that earlier on Thursaday, villagers had staged a road blockade demanding a hike in the compensation amount and the district administration officials had assured to look into the demand
Sources said as many as 55 passengers were returning home after a picnic at the Light House at Hukitola island on the Mahanadi river for the New Year, when the mishap occurred.
After getting information about the mishap on Wednesday evening, fire brigade and coast guard teams reached the spot and carried out rescue operations.
