Newborn boy stolen from VIMSAR rescued, 2 detained

Bhubaneswar: In a major breakthrough, Odisha police on Thursday recovered a newborn baby boy that was stolen from Burla’s VIMSAR a couple of days ago.

As per the latest reports, police traced the stolen newborn to a couple in Rengali, situated in Sambalpur district. Sources mentioned that the recovered baby was being brought back to VIMSAR following the rescue operation.

Sources also reported that police have also taken into custody the couple from whom the infant was recovered and are interrogating them to ascertain the nature and purpose of their action.

The recovery happened after a couple from Chhattisgarh had raised a complaint about their newborn son going missing from VIMSAR on November 26 and had alleged theft of the baby.

Springing into action, the police had reportedly formed four teams and dispatched them to various places across neighbouring districts to trace the newborn. As such, the drive yielded fruit today with police nabbing a woman for allegedly stealing the child while also detaining her husband.

On November 26, the mother of the newborn had raised an alarm after her baby, born a day before, went missing from the hospital premises. As per her statements, a woman had reportedly befriended her sister-in-law and offered to hold the infant while the family was eating.

Afterward, the woman accused of stealing was nowhere to be found and had allegedly taken the baby with her. The CCTV footage captured her leaving the hospital premises with the infant in her arms, confirming the suspicions.

The incident occurred at a time when cases of child trafficking were being actively reported from several parts of the state. Meanwhile, police had not yet issued a statement on the case and the baby’s rescue.
