Gajapati SP Sarah Sharma lends voice for women empowerment
Bhubaneswar: Taking the initiative for women empowerment, Gajapati Superintendent of Police Sarah Sharma turned singer by lending her voice for a music video of a project titled ‘She Team.’
The 2010 Odisha cadre IPS officer Sarah recorded soundtrack of the women empowerment project ‘She Team’ that will be launched in Left-wing extremism (LWE) affected district on June 28.
Through ‘She Team’ theme song, directed by Guru Raghuram Patro, Sarah has attempted to create awareness among the masses on safety of women and minor girls in Gajapati district.
‘She Team’ has been undertaken as the pilot project in Gajapati district, Sarah said, adding that the team members under the programme will rescue women from being harassed or manhandled at any place in the district.
The song empowers women and makes them feel confident. After several discussions with young girls of the district, Sarah felt the need to strengthen women safety in the area and thus the idea of ‘SHE Team’ was born.
“The girls told me that they feel unsafe while returning home in the night because of rampant eve-teasing. Despite the presence of police personnel, the girls still felt afraid. Immediately, I decided to start the ‘SHE Team,” Sarah said.
The team will be headed by a lady sub-inspector and it will patrol the streets across the district. They will keep a strict watch on eve-teasing and harassment cases. The helpline number will also be widely publicised so that girls can easily report a complaint. “While the team will start functioning after some days, we unveiled the logo and recorded the theme song as the first step to spread awareness. Men, women, boys and girls, all have to be aware and only then the society will change,” she said.
