Election Commission defers Pipili Assembly by-poll
Bhubaneswar: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday postponed the by-election to Pipili Assembly seat, scheduled to be held on May 16, in view of the surge in Covid pandemic situation. Sources said the by-election to Pipili Assembly seat was postponed on the basis of reports of the State Chief Electoral Officer.
A fresh date for the by-election would be announced after assessing the Covid pandemic situation. This was for the third time the by-election to Pipili Assembly seat was deferred.
The by-election to Pipili was scheduled to be held on April 17 but was adjourned and fixed for May 13 following the demise of the Congress candidate on April 14 just three days before the election.
The date for Pipili by-election was again shifted to May 16 after some people appealed to the ECI to change the date stating that it would be difficult on their part to participate in the poll as Id-ul Fitr falls on May 13.
Now the Pipili by-election was postponed again due to the second wave of Covid pandemic in the State. “Fresh notification will be issued after assessing the pandemic situation,” the ECI said in a statement.
