BJD woman leader attempts immolation protesting son’s arrest
Berhampur: A BJD woman leader Meenakshi Mishra attempted to commit suicide by setting herself ablaze in front of SP’s office here on Wednesday.
Meenakshi was rescued in critical condition and immediately admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
Sources said Meenakshi’s son Raja was recently arrested by police for his involvement in a quarrel over parking issue. Protesting her son’s arrest, the BJD leader attempted self-immolation in front of the SP’s office.
“In the CCTV footage, it is clearly shown that my son was brutally thrashed by a group of people with a cricket bat in broad daylight on January 28. On what grounds the police arrested my son, who is innocent,” she asked.
SP Pinak Mishra said that she is critical and will be shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital.
He said the woman’s complaint was duly addressed by the Additional SP. “Since I was not present at the office, a senior officer attended to her grievance. However, after leaving the premises, she took to immolation,” he added.
