Youth kills mother over family dispute in Mayurbhanj, arrested

Bhubaneswar: A family dispute took a tragic turn after a 19-year-old youth allegedly strangled his mother to death in Mayurbhanj district. The incident occurred at Barajpur village under Baripada Sadar police limits last night.

The deceased has been identified as Srimati Singh of the village. The police have arrested accused Kuinia Singh and launched an investigation into the incident.

According to police, Srimati’s husband had died earlier and the couple had four sons and two daughters. She had married off her two daughters a few years ago. Srimati and her four sons used to work in Chennai. Recently, she and her second son Kuinia had returned to their native village.

On Thursday night, an argument reportedly broke out between the mother and son over some issue. An enraged Kuinia allegedly strangled his mother to death inside their house. The incident came to light on Friday morning after neighbours learned about it and informed the police.

Baripada Sadar SDPO Prabhat Mallik and Sadar Police Station Inspector Sasmita Mahanta, along with a scientific team, rushed to the spot and launched a probe. The police seized the body and sent it for post-mortem.

The cops registered a murder case and arrested the accused. “During the interrogation, the accused has confessed to the crime. We are waiting for the postmortem report to ascertain the exact cause of the woman’s death,” said a police officer.
