Veteran grassroots leader Muralidhar Rath dies at 92

Bhubaneswar: Noted social worker and veteran grassroots leader from Tirtol block of Jagatsinghpur district Muralidhar Rath passed away at a private hospital here due to age-related ailments on Saturday. He was 92.

Rath, a five-time sarpanch of Patilo panchayat and former vice-chairman of Tirtol Panchayat Samiti, has left an indelible mark on the region through decades of dedicated service. During his illustrious tenure, he gained immense respect from the community by securing government employment opportunities for the youth and undertaking significant development initiatives.

His philanthropic endeavours include constructing a grand Ram temple in his birthplace at his own expense and renovating several temples and mosques across 3-4 panchayats, promoting harmony and cultural preservation.

In the realm of social, political, and religious service, Rath stands as a beacon of inspiration. Born on February 20, 1934 in Chandpur, his life has been an extraordinary journey of perseverance, dedication, and unwavering commitment to the betterment of society.

Rising through sheer hard work and determination, he believed that success is a result of diligence rather than mere luck. His philosophy of life, encapsulated in the mantra “Fight for Right,” propelled him to bring transformative changes to his village and district. His dedication to social service led to significant developmental milestones, such as the establishment of irrigation facilities (Arijang Sub-minor Canal), the provision of drinking water and electricity, and the construction of new roads in his panchayat.

His biography ‘Jeeban Sauda’ published by his sons has gained immense popularity among his admirers, while its cinematic adaptation ‘Deepa Sikha’ has emerged as a motivational masterpiece.

Condolence messages and tribute poured in from across the district and Bhubaneswar. The district Congress committee members also expressed condolences over his demise.
