Utkal University observes National Press Day with quest and retrospection

Bhubaneswar: The Department of Public Administration with Journalism and Mass Communication Programme, Utkal University observed National Press Day 2025 bringing together eminent journalists, faculty members, research scholars and students for an engaging day of academic discourse.

Sandeep Sahu, noted senior journalist of the State and BBC correspondent since more than three decades along with Sisir Bhatta Mishra, Editor of Nandighosha TV joined the event as speakers.

Sahu shared valuable insights on the role of media as the voice of vulnerable communities and its responsibility to question and hold the government accountable. He stressed the significance of press freedom, drawing attention to India’s 151st ranking in the World Press Freedom Index. He further expressed concern over the ongoing crisis of media credibility, underscoring the need for integrity, authenticity and a constructive relationship with governance systems, especially in areas requiring critical intervention and intrinsic policy paralysis getting reflected since ages. Introspecting over his own career in journalism spanning over three decades, he spoke candidly about the hardships, unpredictability and sacrifices inherent in media parlances, urging students to face these challenges with honesty and resilience to win over.

Mishra offered an inspiring and optimistic perspective on journalism, while motivating aspiring journalists to pursue their careers with passion and a commitment towards bringing positive change for the muted voices in society. He added his personal anecdotes from student life days which shaped further media leadership roles in different capacities and hollow phases of career coming handy to achieve expertise in domain knowledge attainments.

The deliberations by both the speakers was followed by an engaging open Q&A session, having contestations over media – state dichotomy, ethical limitations of journalism during testing times, AI and technology driving new media culture and responsible use of social media as a driver of change for people.

The event began with official welcome address by Dr. Pratima Sarangi, Head of Public Administration Department. She impinged over the indispensable role of media in a democratic society and emphasized the responsibility of every citizen as stakeholders to remain informed and contribute meaningfully in nation building efforts. Asst. Professor of the Department Dr. Hemant Kumar Dash coordinated the proceedings, while offering theme note of National Press Day 2025 and guest introduction.

Faculty of the Department Mr. Rajiv Milan offered official vote of thanks. The day marked a crucial step ahead in brain storming and reinforcing the vital role of a free, responsible and ethical press, while upscaling democratic values and ethos.
