Bhubaneswar: As a part of the state-wide initiative to ensure safety, security, and empowerment of women in educational institutions, the Utkal University on Monday launched its ‘Shaktishree’ Empowerment Cell at MKCG Auditorium on the campus.
Speaking on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Chandi Prasad Nanda emphasised the importance of a learning environment where every student, particularly female, feels secured and ready to take on the world.
Joining the ceremony as chief guest, Vice Chancellor of Rama Devi Women’s University Prof. Jyotsna K.B. Rout said that the Shaktishree Empowerment Cells will act as permanent and student-led hubs in higher education institutions to ensure the safety, empowerment, and emotional well-being of girl students and staff.
Executive Director of Eastern Media Limited and Editor of Sambad Tanaya Patnaik appreciated the idea of such cells in higher educational institutions which would primarily be beneficial for women leadership, skill building, grievance redressal and mentorship.
On the occasion, the names of Shaktishree Saathi, selected peer leaders of the university, were announced along with departmental representatives of the cell. The Shaktishree Empowerment Cell aims to prevent atrocities and empower female students through self-defence training, legal awareness, and mental health support on the campus.
Days after the self-immolation death of a college student in Balasore over alleged sexual harassment last year, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi had launched the ‘Shaktishree’ as a transformative empowerment and self-defence initiative.
Among others, Chairperson of PG Council Prof. Jagneshwar Dandapat and Registrar Dr. Swati Mishra also spoke. While Director of Students’ Welfare Prof. Bhaswati Patnaik rendered the welcome address, coordinator of the cell Dr. Swapna S. Prabhu offered the vote of thanks.
