Sambalpur: Odisha Vigilance has secured the conviction of two engineers for misappropriation of government funds in the district.
The convicted individuals—Sadananda Pradhan, former Assistant Engineer (retired) of Maneswar Block, and Biranchi Narayan Dash, Assistant Engineer posted at Brutang Irrigation Project in Daspalla—were found guilty in a vigilance case linked to financial irregularities.
The case was adjudicated by the Special Judge, Vigilance, Sambalpur, who convicted both accused under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, along with sections of the Indian Penal Code. The court sentenced each of them to two years of rigorous imprisonment along with a monetary fine.
According to officials, the case dates back to 2008–09 and involves alleged misappropriation of government funds by recording inflated measurements in a road improvement project under the MGNREG Scheme in Maneswar Block.
Investigations revealed that the manipulation of project records led to wrongful financial gains, prompting the vigilance department to file charges against the accused.
Following the conviction, Odisha Vigilance stated it will approach the competent authority to initiate further action. This includes the stoppage of pension benefits of the retired official and dismissal proceedings against the serving engineer.
Officials reiterated that strict action against corruption in public works remains a priority, and similar cases will continue to be pursued to ensure accountability.
