Malkangiri: The Malkangiri airport in Odisha achieved a major milestone on Wednesday with the successful completion of its trial run, bringing the long-awaited launch of commercial flight operations a step closer.
However, regular flight operations will begin only after the final approval and completion of the remaining regulatory procedures.
A nine-seater aircraft operated by IndiaOne Air landed safely at the airport as part of the trial exercise. Following the landing, the aircraft was welcomed with a ceremonial water cannon salute by the administration. Senior officials from the district administration, airport authorities, security agencies and IndiaOne Air were present during the trial.
After the test flight, the pilot said a detailed assessment of the runway, landing conditions and other airport facilities would be carried out before submitting a comprehensive report to the concerned authorities. The initial assessment indicated that the airport’s infrastructure and operational arrangements were satisfactory.
Such connectivity is expected to significantly improve transportation in the district and create new opportunities in education, healthcare, tourism, trade and investment. Residents believe regular air services will particularly benefit emergency medical transportation, students’ travel and business connectivity.
