Sambalpur: Gangadhar Meher University (GMU) in Odisha’s Sambalpur will not hold direct elections for various posts of the students’ union this year as well.
As in previous years, the university will follow a selection process to choose the president and other representatives of the students’ council.
Under the system, all students will not be able to directly cast their votes to elect their representatives. Instead, a designated group of students will take part in the selection process and choose the representatives.
There are specific eligibility criteria for participating in the process. Students with at least 75 per cent attendance will be eligible to take part in the selection. In the case of first-year postgraduate (PG) students, eligibility to vote will also be determined on the basis of their marks.
GMU last conducted direct polls to the students’ union in 1998. Since then, the university has followed the selection system instead of holding direct elections for the students’ council president and other posts.
The same system will continue this year. So, the students of GMU will once again not get an opportunity to elect their representatives through a direct voting process.
