Bhubaneswar: The Southwest Monsoon has advanced further into Odisha, bringing the entire coastal belt under its coverage.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the monsoon, which had progressed into some districts of north coastal Odisha on June 12, advanced into several more districts on June 15 after a gap of two days. Conditions are favourable for the further advancement of the Southwest Monsoon into the remaining parts of Odisha over the next four to five days.
The rain-bearing system had arrived in north coastal Odisha on June 12, an unusual development as it typically advances from the southern region, particularly over Malkangiri and Koraput, before gradually spreading northward to cover the rest of the state, The dry northwest winds, however, managed to push back monsoon moisture in the middle and upper troposphere, which has led to a noticeable reduction in rainfall.
“The northern limit of monsoon continues to pass through Harnai, Solapur, Hyderabad, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Kalingapatnam, Paradeep, Baripada, Purulia, Dhanbad, Muzaffarpur. Conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into some more parts of central Arabian Sea, Maharashtra, remaining parts of Karnataka, Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand & Bihar, and some parts of Chhattisgarh during the next 4-5 days,” the India Meteorological Department said in its middy bulletin.
Meanwhile, the IMD has predicted no significant change in day temperatures over Odisha during the next three days. Thereafter, day temperatures are likely to fall by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in several districts.
