Bhubaneswar: With a low-pressure area taking shape, heavy rain is likely to batter several parts of Odisha over the next one week, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday.
An upper-air cyclonic circulation which lay over north Thailand is likely to emerge over the north Andaman Sea around September 18 evening. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the same region around September 19 evening.
Thereafter, it is likely to intensify gradually and move west-north-westwards towards south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coasts during subsequent 3-4 days, it said.
The weather agency is yet to confirm whether the system may intensify into a cyclonic storm. IMD Director General Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said the weather department is continuously monitoring the system and will issue updates if there are any further changes in its intensity or trajectory.
While the IMD has not predicted any cyclone at this stage, it said the low-pressure system which will bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to Odisha. The weather agency has issued orange and yellow warnings for different districts till the morning of September 24.
In a weather bulletin, the IMD has issued an orange warning of orange warning of thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind over the districts of Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghapur, Kataka, Sundaragada, Jharsuguda, Baragada, Sambalpur, Debagada, Anugola, Dhenkanal, Kendujhar, and Mayurbhanj in next 24 hours.
Similarly, a yellow warning of heavy rain has been sounded for the districts of Baleshwar, Kendujhar, and Mayurbhanj during the period.
Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface is likely to occur at some places of Subarnapur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamala, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha, and Nayagada.
On September 18-19, the weather agency has issued a yellow warning of heavy rain in Sundaragada, Kendujhar, and Mayurbhanj.

On September 19-20, thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind may to occur in Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghapur, Kataka, Sundaragada, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha, Nayagada.
Thunderstorm activity is likely to continue in several parts of the state till September 22.
On September 23-24, heavy rainfall is likely to lash some places over the districts of Baleshwar, Mayurbhanj, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, and Ganjam.
