Heat index spikes in Odisha post-LoPAR, Puri feels like 47°C

Bhubaneswar: With the low-pressure system moving far away from the region, muggy, hot, and highly humid weather conditions have returned to coastal Odisha, causing uncomfortable daytime heat.

According to morning weather observation data recorded at 8:30 am on Thursday, coastal areas in the state are witnessing high relative humidity levels combined with elevated feel-like temperatures (heat index).

Puri recorded a temperature of 32.6°C alongside a humidity level of 81%. This combination has driven the heat index up to a scorching 47°C, making conditions feel significantly hotter than the actual temperature. The capital city of Bhubaneswar is experiencing similar conditions. Morning observations recorded a temperature of 30.2°C and a humidity level of 78%, pushing the perceived temperature (heat index) to 38°C.

Meteorological tracking suggests that these hot and humid conditions are likely to prevail over coastal Odisha throughout the day, bringing lingering daytime discomfort. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions and stay hydrated during peak daytime hours.

While rainfall activity in the state is expected to remain subdued for two days, the intensity of downpour may increase from the morning of August 21. Several parts of the state are also expected to experience thunderstorm activity.
