Bhubaneswar: Odisha witnessed extremely heavy to very heavy rainfall at 49 places under the influence of a deep depression over south Odisha and adjoining Chhattisgarh, with Nabarangpur recording the highest rainfall of 395 mm in the past 24 hours.
According to the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, the system triggered extremely heavy rainfall at 12 stations, very heavy rainfall at 37 stations and heavy rainfall at 65 stations up to 8.30 am on September 25, 2026.
Nabarangpur district recorded the highest number of heavy rainfall locations, with six stations receiving exceptionally high rainfall. Four stations in Koraput and two in Kendrapada also recorded extremely heavy rainfall.
Tentulikhunti in Nabarangpur received the highest rainfall of 395 mm, followed by Nandahandi in Nabarangpur with 344 mm and Boriguma in Koraput with 307 mm.
Deep depression weakens
According to a special bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the deep depression over south Odisha and adjoining south Chhattisgarh moved north-northwestwards at a speed of around 15 kmph during the past six hours and weakened into a depression.
At 5.30 am on Friday, the system lay over south interior Odisha and adjoining Chhattisgarh, close to Nuapada district. It was located around 90 km west-northwest of Titilagarh, 100 km northwest of Bhawanipatna, 110 km east-northeast of Kanker in Chhattisgarh and 120 km southeast of Raipur.
The system is likely to continue moving north-northwestwards while maintaining depression intensity for the next 12 hours. It is expected to weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area during the subsequent 12 hours.
Under the influence of the system, several parts of Odisha are likely to receive heavy rainfall over the next two days. The IMD has issued orange and yellow warnings for different districts.
Orange Warning — Valid until 8.30 am, September 26: Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places in Nuapada, Nabarangpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh and Mayurbhanj districts.
Yellow Warning — Valid until 8.30 am, September 26: Heavy rainfall is very likely at one or two places in Kalahandi, Balangir, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jajpur, Jagatsinghpur, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Subarnapur and Koraput districts.
Yellow Warning — September 26 morning to September 27 morning: Heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places in Bargarh, Jharsuguda and Sundargarh districts.
The IMD has advised people in the affected districts to remain alert as the weather system continues to move north-northwestwards across the region.
