A series of violent incidents reported across Odisha within a single day has raised fresh concerns over law and order in the state. Cases involving murder, suspected suicide, and assault were reported from different districts.
Woman’s body found on Kathajodi riverbed in Cuttack
Cuttack: A partially buried body of a woman was found on a remote stretch of the Kathajodi riverbed under Baranga police limits in Cuttack on Thursday. Her identity has not been ascertained yet. The portion of the riverbed, where the body was found, is not accessible by vehicles and is difficult to reach by foot. It is suspected that stray dogs may have dug up the sand, exposing the remains and leading to the grim discovery.
Murder over mobile theft in Balasore
Balasore: Tension gripped Balasore district as locals blocked NH-16 for nearly four hours on Wednesday night after a 24-year-old man was allegedly hacked to death over previous enmity. The blockade caused significant traffic disruption. The victim, Ranjit Mallick, a resident of Junabalada village, was attacked by four assailants armed with sharp weapons. The incident occurred near Junabalada Chhak under Basta police limits. He suffered severe injuries to his neck, chest, and other parts of the body. Local residents nabbed one of the suspects and rushed the critically injured youth to Remuna hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Youth hangs self over online gaming losses in Angul
Angul: A 24-year-old newly-married man was found hanging from a cashew tree near Machhakuta playground under Chhendipada police limits in Angul district on Thursday. The deceased has been identified as Manas Behera. According to police and family sources, Behera lost significant sums of money while playing online games, triggering repeated conflicts at home. The incident is particularly heartbreaking as Behera had got married just 15 days ago.
+3 student found hanging in Bhadrak
Bhadrak: A second-year Plus-III Commerce student was found hanging inside the bathroom of his family home at Charampa Bazar under Bhadrak Town police limits on Thursday morning, triggering shock, grief, and allegations of foul play. According to family members, the 19-year-old had gone for a morning walk early on Thursday as usual. He returned home and spent some time interacting with his father and other family members before suddenly disappearing. Concerned family members began searching the house and around 6:30 am, his mother allegedly found him hanging inside the toilet with hands tied behind his back and a cloth across his mouth.
Dalit woman assaulted in Puri
Puri: A Dalit woman was allegedly denied access to drinking water and assaulted by some villagers in Kanas area of Puri district. Showing signs of caste-based discrimination, the incident reportedly took place at Karmala village under the jurisdiction of Gadisagoda police station in the district. It was alleged that the woman had gone to a local matha to fetch drinking water but she was prevented from doing so by some villagers. When the woman protested, she was reportedly abused with certain remarks about her caste and physically assaulted. The incident triggered widespread outrage after a video appeared on social media.
Another accused surrenders in Berhampur assault case
Berhampur: In a major development in the brutal attack on a young couple in Berhampur, another accused surrendered before the police on Thursday, hours after three persons were arrested in connection with the sensational incident. Police sources said the accused identified as Ashish Sahu, surrendered at Berhampur Town Police Station after his elder brother was apprehended by the cops. Ashish is reported to be the younger brother of the prime accused, Mukesh Sahu, in the attack that took place near Giri Road in Berhampur on Monday night. Police had earlier arrested two accused in connection with the case on Wednesday.
