Man arrested for posing as NIA officer

Bhubaneswar: A man was arrested by the police in Bhubaneswar on Friday for allegedly posing as a National Investigation Agency (NIA) officer here on Friday. He was apprehended at Kharavela Nagar police station, where he was allegedly trying to pressurize officers for action in a case. According to sources, the accused reached the police station and urged officers to act fast in a case filed by his female friend. He told police that he was an NIA officer and showed a fake identity card. He had arrived in what looked like a police vehicle, bearing Tamil Nadu number plate as well as stickers of Government of India and Ministry of Home Affairs on it. His behavior created suspicion and cops contacted the regional NIA office to verify his identity.

Two more held in Rs 9.6 crore bank cheque cloning scam

Bhubaneswar: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Odisha Police has arrested two more individuals in connection with a Rs 9.56 crore cheque cloning fraud at Bank of India’s Baripada branch. The arrested persons have been identified as Surjit Roy, proprietor of Roy Associates, and Sameer Srivastav, proprietor of SS Traders. They were apprehended from Raipur in Chhattisgarh on May 21, and brought to Bhubaneswar after obtaining transit remand on Friday. The duo will be produced before the Designated Court under the OPID Act in Balasore.

Youths chased & thrashed in Udala

Baripada: A disturbing video showing two young men being chased and brutally beaten by a group of assailants in broad daylight at Udala in Mayurbhanj district went viral on Friday. According to sources, three to four men pursued the victims, punching, kicking, and thrashing them mercilessly as locals watched in shock. One of the youths was left bleeding from the assault, which is being attributed to a dispute over alleged poor-quality construction work in the area. The incident took place at Ward number 5, barely 500 metres from the Udala police station.

Co-operative official held in Rs 75 lakh embezzlement case

Rayagada: The Odisha Vigilance on Friday arrested Tarini Prasad Tripathy, Managing Director of K Singhpur Large Area Multi-Purpose Co-operative Society (LAMPCS) in Rayagada district, for alleged misappropriation of Rs 75 lakh funds. The fraud was committed between 2024 and 2026 through systematic manipulation of official records and documents. A case has been registered at Koraput Vigilance police station under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 2018, and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

Ex-Panchayat Secretary convicted in Vigilance case

Sundargarh: The Court of the Learned Special Judge, Vigilance, Sundargarh on Friday convicted a former Panchayat Secretary in a corruption and misappropriation case registered by the Vigilance department more than two decades ago. The convicted accused has been identified as Alexander Ekka (66), former Panchayat Secretary of Jodakudar Gram Panchayat under Lathikata Block in Sundargarh district. He is currently residing at Buchahanda village under Brahmanitarang police limits.

Man critical after attack by sons

Balasore: A man was allegedly attacked with a sharp weapon by his two sons near the Soro court in Balasore district on Friday. The injured man has been identified as Ganesh Barik (45) of Tundapada village in Soro area. He sustained critical injuries in the attack and is currently undergoing treatment at the Balasore District Headquarters Hospital. According to reports, Ganesh had been involved in a long-standing dispute with his sons over the division of family land. On Friday afternoon, his elder son Kiran Kumar Barik (23) and younger son Kshirod Kumar Barik (19) allegedly called him near the Soro court to discuss the matter. Later, they attacked him over the issue.

BJD youth leader arrested over ganja smuggling

Paralakhemundi: A youth leader of Biju Janata Dal (BJD) was arrested in Gajapati district on Friday for his alleged involvement in ganja smuggling. The leader, identified as Mosha Majhi, is also accused of encouraging cannabis cultivation and providing financial assistance for the illegal trade. A resident of Birikot village under Adaba police limits, Majhi is also the district secretary of BJD and a former sarpanch of Birikot Panchayat. Police sources said Majhi was allegedly involved in financing and supporting ganja cultivation activities by motivating local people and extending monetary assistance for illegal cannabis trade operations.
