Bhadrak: The alleged sexual assault and killing of a minor girl in Chandbali area of Bhadrak district has sparked widespread public outrage and intensified political reactions across Odisha. Opposition parties Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Congress jointly observed a Chandbali bandh on Thursday, demanding swift justice and strict action against those responsible.
The shutdown, observed from 6 am to 12 noon, disrupted normal life in the area. Shops remained closed, and vehicular movement was affected at several locations. Protesters gathered at prominent junctions, including College Square, to register their protest.
Amid growing public anger, locals reportedly damaged the residence of the prime accused. Police later confirmed that the accused was arrested from Jagatsinghpur district.
The Eastern Range Deputy Inspector General of Police stated that a detailed investigation is underway and that all aspects of the case are being examined. Authorities have assured that further legal action will be taken based on investigative findings.
Responding to the incident, Chief Minister Mohan Majhi announced an ex-gratia assistance of ₹10 lakh for the victim’s family as immediate support.
Additionally, members of the Odisha State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (OSCPCR) visited Chandbali and met the family. Commission member Manasmita Khuntia, along with the District Child Protection Officer, assured the family of support and assistance in accordance with legal provisions.
The team also held discussions with senior police officials, including the Superintendent of Police, at Chandbali Police Station to review the progress of the investigation.
According to reports, the minor girl had gone missing and was later found in a critically injured condition near a bridge in the Chandbali area. She was rushed to the Bhadrak District Headquarters Hospital, where she was under medical care.
Police officials had earlier detained a youth in connection with the case and stated that the victim’s statement would be recorded once her medical condition permitted.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring justice while urging the public to maintain peace and allow the investigation to proceed.
