Ahead of Bijepur by-poll, Ashok Panigrahi quits BJP
Bhubaneswar: Ahead of Bijepur by-poll, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ashok Panigrahi resigned from the party on Saturday.
In his letter to BJP State president Basant Panda, Panigrahi has alleged negligence by the party towards him.
Panigrahi, who had quit BJD in 2018 and joined BJP, lost the Bijepur by-poll that year to Rita Sahu of the ruling party. He was denied ticket during general elections in 2019.
Panigrahi said, “The party was having a use-and-throw attitude towards me and ignored me on several occasions. The party leadership neither took me into confidence while taking decisions nor gave any responsibility during polls or by-poll. Therefore, I took this decision.”
The senior leader said he would decide on his future course of action after consulting his supporters. “Before election, I won’t join any party. As far as any chance of rejoining BJD is concerned, there is no such plan,” Panigrahi said.
The by-poll to Bijepur Assembly constituency will be held on October 21. The counting of votes will take place on October 24.
The by-poll was necessitated after Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who won from both Bijepur and Hinjili Assembly constituencies, vacated the Bijepur seat.
