5 get lifer in journalist Tarun murder case
Berhampur: A local court in Khallikote on Thursday convicted five persons and sentenced them to life in jail in 2014 television journalist Tarun Acharya murder case.
Khallikote Additional District Judge court awarded life imprisonment to Santosh Maharana, Sibaram Nayak, Shyam Sundar Prusty, Suresh Chandra Sahu and Ramesh Reddy. They were found guilty of killing Tarun Acharya. The sentence was pronounced after 45 witnesses were cross-examined.
Six persons, including journalist Sibaram Nayak, were involved in the sensational murder of the television journalist. While five were arrested in this connection, one Nrusingha Panda is absconding.
The case was handed over to the Crime Branch in 2015 after an order by the Orissa High Court.
Tarun Acharya, who was a journalist with an Odia news channel, was killed on May 27, 2014 for his report on exploitation of child labour.
He had reported employment of child labourers in a cashew processing factory owned by one of the convicts, Shyam Sundar Prusty, at Bharasa. According to reports, Prusty had hired three contract killers Suresh Chandra Sahu, Ramesh Reddy and Nrusingha Panda to eliminate Acharya.
